What are some things that make u go.....hmm

How is it that scientist are able to clone animals and the like but are unable to find cures for A.I.D.S, cures for cancer, allow the blind to see, and be able to heal the paralyzed.

Maybe if the government would invest in stuff that is essential to everday living and quit wasting it by experimentation the world would be a better place.

actually cloning is very important and could become a valuable resource used in cancer treatments, organ transplants, etc. once perfected. its just the ethics of it that slows down the process of incorporating cloned organs, for example, into the medical practices we have today.

This is going to sound pretty callous, but I'm almost glad they HAVEN'T found a cure for these diseases. Let's face it: we are facing a global overcrowding situation, and are rapidly oustripping the planet's ability to support our needs. If ever there was an immortality formula, you can bet your ass that the power that be would do their best to silence or bury it. And for good reason. Can you imagine everyone living for ever and having babies that live forever. Talk about speeding up our extinction!

I'm sure you're all saying, "Well, he's just saying that because he doesn't have one of those diseases." You're probably right. But I fear the pain of those diseases (KS, constant nausea, blindness, etc) than actual death. Fear of death is like a fear of blinking or fear of getting teeth. It's going to happen, whether you like it or not, and I can't understand why people do everything in their power to sort of avoid the topic entirely.

It would be nice to cure paralysis, though...

of course they are. but its just human nature to want to defy those forces and have what we want.

Because cloning animals is relatively easy. Taking a nucleus out of one cell and putting it into another wouldn't be as difficult if the damn things were just a little bit bigger. It just takes a lot of tries to get it to work right.

AIDS is caused by a virus that's undergoes such a high rate of mutation that once you get some work done on protein inhibitors that will make cells resistant from infection, the HIV mutates and screws you over.

There are so many different types of cancer and so many different possible causes for them that to try to explain why it's difficult to find a cure would result in a novel length dissertation...

As for blindness and paralysis, now you're working with nerves, types of cells that were not meant to be regenerated in humans. Once these things have been terminally differentiated, they aren't going to divide and make another nerve cell. So now you either have to find a way to repair them or make more, both of which are asking a lot of researchers.

Sorry, but how narrow-minded can you get? Yes, let's stop experimenting and instead focus on keeping the status quo. Who needs advancements in technology or cures for diseases. With a mindset like that, you should have lived during the Dark Ages in Europe when no one was doing any thinking at all. Also, the government isn't spending that much money on science. Private donations and businesses are funding a lot of biological studies. The cloning technique wasn't even perfected in the U.S., so I don't know how you're equating that with governement spending.
