Computer Problems

If you guys are anything like me, this is the first (and sometimes only) forum you guys visit. Thats why i have posted here (sorry for the inconvenience) Recently my computer has been giving me many problems and i was wondering if anyone could help me out.
Here is the link to the thread: http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000113.html

Thanks

I have no direct solutions, sorry, just troubleshooting tips.

I'm assuming that you had no similar problems with the old setup before you added the new hard drive? If that's the case then I'd rule out a possible virus problem (the not shutting down hinted at the possibility).

Before advising any drastic measures (ie. installing windows onto the slave and booting off of it) you might want to try www.deja.com/usenet and see if there are any compatibility problems with the DiamondMax drive with your motherboard or with any of your other hardware. Deja.com has saved my life numerous times because of people posting problems AND solutions to the same obscure problems I had with my computer.

If you can't find anything there then try to see if you can isolate the problem to the hard drive. If you got it at a local retailer then try to exchange it for a new one. If not, there's the possibility of trying to install Windows on it and making it your master drive and disabling the IBM drive altogether. That way you can see if it's the hard drive that's causing a problem.

If all else fails, then it could very well be the power supply. If anyone's had a problem like this before most likely their solution will be much faster and better than my troubleshooting

i'm pretty sure that there is nothing wrong with the drive itself. even before adding the drive i had problems starting the computer

Have you tried without overclocking? If it works okay without overclocking, it's probably a timing issue.

Take a look at what I said hapoo in that thread. It definitely sounds like you need more power.

maggie: the computer has been overclocked since the day i got it, and i've never had a problem with it through all the hardware changes

sbp: thanks for the links, i've never shopped for a separate PS, does brand matter?

So did the problem just start happening out of the blue?

I also have another reason why it could be a power issue. yesterday i right clicked on the icon for the Maxtor and as soon as the menu dropped down the computer restarted. I'm guessing that the hard drive was in sleep mode and when i right clicked on it the computer started powering it up, causing the computer to restart. Other times it just happens at random places.

I like the features on the Enermax 350 Watt ATX power supply. how much power would you say is good.

for about 4 months now i've had problems starting the computer (i explained what happens in the link to the other thread)

Last week i went on a vacation and when i came back it was working fine but wouldnt shut down correctly. 2 days ago i got the hard drive and after i put it in it started restarting.

I know 300 watts suffices for a P3 800EB so 350 does sound like a lot for a oc'd P2

Enermax and Antec are both great power supplies hapoo. I have a 350 watt power supply in my main system. Go it with the 350 watt enermax since it doesn't cost that much more.

i just read the little installation packet for the hard drive and it says the if your using a 80 conductor ide cable that you have to connect the one end to the controller, the other end to the master drive and the center connector to the slave drive. I always thought that it didn't matter which connector was connected to which device (master slave). does this really make a difference?

ohh also, can someone tell me what the cable select option on hard drives is, i've seen this for years but i never knew what it was

ahhh ok i just found out

If you put both drives on cable select mode (and the motherboard suports it) the master/slave property of the drive will be determined by its position on the cable.
