Your PS2 impressions...

OK, so we've all had them for over a week (those of us who got them, that is...). So what's the verdict. I got Madden, and rented Silent Scope from Kozmo (which rents games for, like, 6 days...): -Madden is pretty amazing. The physics seem out of this world, and isn't techmo bowl-y in its game play (i.e., no immediate cuts, touching a guy doesn't result in a ginormous hit, etc.) I really like the realism. The "hitting through" somebody happens graphically, but not enough to be a nuisance. Can't say the same thing for the game commentary, which repeats every two minutes, as far as I can tell. I can't believe Sony didn't include a second controller, though. How cheap can you get?! This game is pretty lame without a memcard, too. However, once you get one, the franchise feature is freaking awesome. -Silent Scope totally bites. End of story. The DVD player is pretty reasonable, though, I'm happy with it, although I have to buy a remote. All in all, I figure I'd have spent $160-$200 for an equivalent DVD player, so I got a better-than-DCX console for $100-$140. As the games develop further, I'm pretty psyched to see how game developers unlock the PS2's potential. Your thoughts? __________________ Quote: Originally posted by pennypinch Your thoughts? I didn't get one, and I can see the DVD advantage. But, I just don't really care for the console. It was over hyped, and soon to be outdated. The advantage that the original PS1 had was it's technology, which made for a machine that could grow. PS1 came out and wowed people with the lowest graphics it could produce. But that was just after Super Nintendo, and before there was any real 3d console. Now, in the era of cheap video cards, PS2 has a whole lot of work ahead. On the growth and potential side, the PS2 has alot to offer, but they don't have the time to stretch out that growth. With PS1, they were able to make the growth period long, and therefore create more games, and have a larger installed base. They don't have the luxury of time, not with Dolphin and Xbox on the way. As much as I hate Microsoft, I'll be happy to buy an Xbox. It should be the best of both worlds; the expandibiliy of your PC, and the performance of a console. Sorry, but I think Sony released what is soon to be a clunker. Blu __________________ See, that's what they said with the advent of the N64, that the PS1 was dead in the water. Not so. We all know the N64 had better 3D capabilities/better looking games/better controller, yet the PS1 was the best selling console of all time. Explanations? With USB ports, a hard drive bay, and an online connection of some sort, I think the PS2 is pretty capable of expansion of services. What those services will be is still to be seen, but I'm interested. I think this is just a repeat of the PS1 experience: Sega came out with Saturn, Sony clobbered it six months later, the Nintendo was too late to catch up. I think by the time the Gamecube and XBox get their act together, it'll be too late again; Sony will have too many developers in their hip pocket, Sega will be working on their next system, and only the ugly girls will be left at the party for Nintendo and MS. Any opinions on the games you guys bought, aside from the in-house Apex reviews at http://www.gotapex.com? __________________ SSX is soooo much fun. I recommend it. Madden is cool. Wish it implemented more than two players, though. Tekken is *yawn*.... Same game with better graphics. DOA2: Hardcore is pretty fun with clean graphics. Grip: I can't play that much because I still don't have a memory card. (can you tell if i received a ps2?) j/k! actually, i really didn't feel like paying an arm and a leg for a game system (i got my dreamcast for free). the games don't seem THAT much more impressive, not the ones i've seen that are available. or was it necessary to get a dvd player since i already have one. besides, i'm sure it works well as a dvd player, but i'm guessing that most of the time was spent on developing the gaming console. so i'm curious as to the quality of it. all in all, after seeing the amt of money people are willing to spend on it, i'd rather get out of the way of those people, spend my money on my friends, and wait for my b-day to come up...heh! __________________ Quote: Originally posted by Leon SSX is soooo much fun. Here's what I did.. I cancelled it! Guess what though... I used the 30 off 150 coupon, and when i cancelled it, they didnt remove the 30 off... (i had madden and ssx in my order too)so I got madden and ssx for $65 total. So, if we keep it on the downlow, we may be able to get away with things like this in the future... BTW- Go to Toys R US and see if they have extra stuff. Mine has a fully stocked shelf of Mem cards and controllers, so I just picked 'em up there. __________________ OOh, very sneaky IrishSS! You can't use a PS1 mem card for PS2 games, you do realize this, don't ya penny? The PS2 card will work for PS1 games though... I heard somewhere that in the middle of this month that Sony will release a 16 Mb mem card, although I can't confirm this... __________________ I know, the screen when I added it to my cart said it would ship in 24-48 hours, but no! They now have no ETA on the thing. I'm tempted to cancel it too, but I only got a roll of paper towels with it. GRR! Are you sure you can't use PS1 memory cards? It thought that was the point of backwards compatibility! It lists, as accessories on the PS2 box, PS1 memcards, controllers, and multi-tap. Have you tried a PS1 memory card with the PS2 yet? __________________ Here's how it works, or so I think... You can use PS1 mem cards with PS1 games just fine... it'll read em and write to them. You can use a PS2 mem card for PS1 games as well.. it'll read em(duh) and write PS1 game info to them. Here's the thing, PS2 save game files are usually over 160K, which is how big the PS1 mem card is. So you can't save PS2 games to the PS2 mem card. Mavi forum
