What is the best video editing software?

I have a sony digital video camera with a 1394 connection, a fast computer (800 mhz) and a reasonably large hard drive (40 gigs.) My computer came with some crappy (free) editing software that I wish to replace. What software would you recommend? Oh, BTW, use a Raid for you swap/storage drive if you don't want stuttering video playback.
