How to get online advertising

Here is a random question... Does anyone know how a small website that is just starting out can get advertising? Like, a few cents a page view? Also, how do companies even know that a site will show the advertising? __________________ the site will show the ad because thats how they get paid. you get paid for every person that clicks on the ad. if the ad's not there you dont get paid
