Industry Standard?

I'm looking into upgrading my cpu after three great years (a decade in tech years) with my current piece of $hit. What would you say is the standard these days? What do you all have now? __________________ I've built two systems on Abit motherboards and overclocked Intel Celeron 300A's. And I plan to get Leon's 550E ( hopefully everything will fall through for me ) and overclock that too. __________________ An Intel Pentium 3 or AMD Athlon is industry standard Pdizog. Intel Celeron 2's provide good performance for a decent price. I have a Pentium 3 600e which runs at 800Mhz. AMD is coming out next month with their thunderbird revision of the Athlon. The thunderbird Athlon's L2 cache will run at the full speed of the processor. Current Athlons have L2 cache which run at some divider of the processor speed. This hurts the Athlons performance when it matches up against Pentium 3's at higher (say 700Mhz) processor speeds. Just for your information the Pentium 3 has its L2 cache running at its full speed. The thunderbird Athlon will be faster than Pentium 3's at the same speed. Some people have had compatibility problems with Athlons. The vast majority of these problems can be avoided by using Athlon compatible power supplies and memory. To sum up: a Pentium 3 or Athlon is standard now and what I would go for (and did ). If your going to get an Athlon wait another month and get a thunderbird Athlon. Current Athlons come in a slot one format. Thunderbird Athlons will come in a socketed format. This will be one way to tell them apart.
