I have no President but I do have ...

1) a dead Senator from Missouri going to Congress.

2) a fake President played on TV by Martin Sheen.

3) a new Senator from New York who used to be the wife of the boss of the man who may be President.

4) a Governor from Florida who is the brother of the man who may be President and son of a man who was.

5) a sitting President whose wife now will be hanging around the same men who voted to remove him from office.

6) a senior Senator from South Carolina who, under our current Constitution rules, could be appointed to be President in this standoff despite the fact that he is 98 (added by me - not to mention his orange hair and 28 year old wife).

7) a potential Vice President who, because he did not take his name off the Connecticut Senate race, could end up being
the deciding factor in how the Senate is composed. And
finally ....

8) A state where a Republican Secretary of State and a Democratic Attorney General try to determine the outcome of 25 electoral votes without appearing to be partisan.

Any questions? Frankly, I don't see what the confusion is all about.

A message from Santa

Hello out there all people of the world.

This is Santa and I just wanted to let you know that Christmas may be a little late this year.

See after checking all the boxes and tallying them up, I found some problems with the results.

The first result showed:

428,534,120 Good

428,523,119 Bad

The second result showed:

428,534,118 Good

428,523,121 Bad

So you see, I can't, with good faith, go out and deliver presents while knowing I could have made a mistake. Maybe Little Johnny was good for once, then again, maybe not.

So, I have enlisted the help of all my elves and the Mrs. To help do a recount. We hope to have this finished up by PM on the 24th of December, but there is a possibility that it might take longer. You see the tally cards were not quite clear to me, although I made them myself, I forgot what they meant.

You know, Good...and Bad??? And the check marks I used were not all the same, some went left, some right, some were just a mark. some went through both boxes, and some didn't even have much of a mark on them. I leave it up to them to decide what I meant.

So if you wake up on Christmas morning, and there are no presents under your tree, at least you can tell the kids the story.

There are approximately two billion children (persons under 18) in the world.

However, since Santa does not visit children of Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist (except maybe in Japan) religions, this reduces the workload for Christmas night to 15% of the total, or 378 million (according to the Population Reference Bureau).

At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that comes to 108 million homes, presuming that there is at least one good child in each.

Santa has about 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 967.7 visits per second.

This is to say that for each Christian household with a good child, Santa has around 1/1000th of a second to park the sleigh, hop out, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left for him, get back up the chimney, jump into the sleigh and get on to the next house.

Assuming that each of these 108 million stops is evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false, but will accept for the purposes of our calculations), we are now talking about 0.78 miles per household; a total trip of 75.5 million miles, not counting bathroom stops or breaks.

This means Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second - 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second, and a conventional reindeer can run (at best) 15 miles per hour.

The payload of the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium sized Lego set (two pounds), the sleigh is carrying over 500 thousand tons, not counting Santa himself.

On land, a conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that the "flying" reindeer could pull ten times the normal amount, the job can't be done with eight or even nine of them-Santa would need 360,000 of them.

This increases the payload, not counting the weight of the sleigh, another 54,000 tons, or roughly seven times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth (the ship, not the monarch).

600,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this would heat up the reindeer in the same fashion as a spacecraft reentering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer would absorb 14.3 quintillion joules of energy per second each. In short, they would burst into flames almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them and creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team would be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second, or right about the time Santa reached the fifth house on his trip.

Not that it matters, however, since Santa, as a result of accelerating from a dead stop to 650 m.p.s. in .001 seconds, would be subjected to acceleration forces of 17,500 g's. A 250 pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force, instantly crushing his bones and organs and reducing him to a quivering blob of red goo.

Therefore, if Santa did exist, he's dead now.

Pro Sports (BULL ****)

If anyone has seen Sports Center, ARod's Deal Tops the news.

I think even though it is ten+ years that is crap. Why are tickets so much these days? Duh.

"The largest contract in sports history does not include the lavish perks Rodriguez's agent was reportedly pursuing." Give Me a F-ing Break.

I refuse to patronize this sort of franchise, in fact I demand MLB step in and set the salary cap @ 50 million till 2020...

Needless to say, there will be another strike in Major League Baseball in 2002. This is insane. How can any team justify paying one player what some teams pay an entire roster in a season? It just isn't fair. The Yankees are the perfect example of money buying championships. Now my beloved Indians are desparately trying to hold on to one of the best hitters in the game in Manny Ramirez, but because Manny saw how much ARod was going for (and how much he was offered by the Rangers), he is demanding more and more. The Indians offered him $119M over 7 years with bonuses, but he still turned it down. Rumors are that he still wants to play in Cleveland, and the fans there love him, so why the hell wouldn't you accept an offer like that? Now the Red Sox look like they are going to end up with Ramirez, unless the Indians can pull something together to bring him back.

When Saint Louis made it back to the division championship in '97 they drew huge crowds, the remodeled the stadium, and new owners came in... In '98 Mark McGwire came drawing 30+ average each game, 50 tops... They had a 300 million budget for players... and were losing money... How Da **** can one team buy 1 player, mind you it is 10 years, but this is way out of proportion... There were days when teachers made more than pro sports players. Our society is in a **** hole. Pull out your heads people, stop paying the premuim...

I love baseball and football and waterpolo (Eruh?) but lets keep it reasonable.

$252 freakin' dollars over 10. That's just amazing. Well, I guess they figure Bush'll come to the rescue if it doesn't work out...maybe bomb everyone else in the American league, assuring them of a spot in the WS.

Why baseball and hockey haven't been able to implement a salary cap like the NBA or the NFL have is beyond me. Why the NBA hasn't been able to put in a hard cap is also bewildering. Don't these leagues realize that disparity ruins sports? Baseball is boring enough that having the same 6 teams (give or take a key injury) is BOOOOOOOOOORING??!

What pisses me off the is self-fulfilling prophecy. Owners strong-arm cities into new buildings because they don't have the revenue to pay salaries. Then they go out and spend more than what the stadium can possibly bring in. Then they bitch for a new stadium. It's a neverending cycle. There is little I find more repugnant than a city losing a pro franchise, basically because it's one entity functioning in a way no other business would, and expecting taxpayers to pick up the tab...oh, hold on, I guess the government works that way too...

The only sport that I really enjoy watching anymore is the NFL. Because of the salary cap, most teams are equally talented, therefore, you have no idea who will win each weekend (Now, if my Browns could just capitalize on that!). I lost total interest in the NBA after the strike a few years back. I do enjoy watching hockey, but these expansion teams have really scattered the talent in the league. I'm going to go see a Columbus Blue Jackets game over Christmas break, which should be interesting because the only games I have ever seen in person have been in Joe Louis Arena.

Only sports I watch any more are college ones - football and March Madness, baby. Baseball started to bore me when the Yankees and the Braves decided to start winning the World Series every year, and I've never liked all the stupid rules in the NBA. What is it with no zone D? Keep it NCAA, man.

As long as people keep shelling out the money to go to see these overpaid prima donnas, it will continue to get out of hand. 30,000 people don't pay to go see a teacher teach, so unfortunately we will never live in a society that rewards true heroes.

I was a die hard Cub Fan for 20+ years and finally had enough of supporting a team that raked in money for a loser every year. The only pure form of sports anymore is a few college sports and amateur programs.

I certainly agree that sports salaries are a bit wacky, but I think the most absurd contracts come in the entertainment industry. Yes, I know most people now consider Sports to be an aspect of entertainment, but you know what I mean . . . music and movies. I especially believe this to be true when one looks at the relative merits of the "entertainers" in the fields. While athletes are becoming better and better at what they do, the quality of music and movies seems to be tanking (Of course this is just my opinion and I'm sure many disagree) . . . but I can certainly say this . . . I feel much better spending the money to go to a sporting event than I feel shelling out $9.50 to see a typical movie or $40 or so to see a typical concert.

THS I know what you are saying, but thats bull**** that the players are innocent in all this. Most of them are greedy bastards who will break the hearts of millions of people just to get a materialistic possesion like a private jet or a skybox. Its true these things are nice but if you are getting 15 mil a year already you can buy that **** yourself. Thankfully there are a few players out there who still believe in being loyal to a team and a city(ie Sammy Sosa) even if they are being put up on the trading block like a piece of meat.

It makes me sick to live in a world where grown men are paid $25 million a year to play a game. I have always hated baseball. I remember in the 3rd grade when they tried to teach it to us during recess, I couldn't understand why most of us were just standing around waiting instead of actually doing something.

I have no respect for baseball players. Some of them may be in great athletic shape, but they are being paid to sit on their asses for half the game during half the year. Of all the positions, pitchers should be commanding the highest saleries since they are involved the most in the game and exerting the greatest amount of energy. Even still, they shouldn't be making these gross amounts of money.

I might be more understanding if baseball was a strenuous sport, but it's not. You've got one team standing around in the field and one team sitting around in the dugout just waiting for something to happen. The once in a while a ball goes in play and maybe 2 or 3 of those 9 guys on the field have to actually do something for a few seconds. Then they go back to standing around.

Blame goes to everyone. It's the players' fault for being greedy. It's the managements' fault for being willing to spend so much. Most of all, it's the fans' fault for willing to watch these bastards do nothing but play a boring game.

I agree with almost all of that but I have to say Baseball is not boring at all. For those who don't like baseball to begin with it might be boring but for fans like myself it is not. I am disgusted with the money that these primadonnas are making now but I think the sport of baseball is not at fault. Baseball has been through a lot since it was first played in the late 1800's. From then until now it has reflected the state that this country has been in. Right now it shows that we as Americans are spoiled and money hungry. That I agree with.

players are paid that much because teams are willing to pay that much. If a team isn't willing to pay that much, they won't. Many players have been shunned because of their asking price. Sure, they maybe be a little greedy with the money they ask for, but if a team says "sure why not", then the player is not to blame for taking it. Keep in mind, the owners make hella lot more money than the player does, and he's the one deciding to jack up ticket prices to buy a better player who'll make the team better so as to increase the fan base, thereby multiplying revenue. If there is a strike, its basically billionairs versus millionairs. I go for the millionairs.

This is not a high skilled job, folks.If the average kid started practicing at 7 years old, and devoted the next 11 or 12 years at being really good, couldn't he have a decent career for the rest of his life? I just don't understand it!

We are so screwed by the Chargers in San Diego. It isn't even funny. The franchise is paid out of the city coffers if no one shows up for the game. This particular brand of theft is called a ticket guarantee. The franchise has no motivation to do well. They have a solid grip on last place. We have the worst money grubbing excuse for a quarterback in professional sports. Mr. Leif chooses not to play because of an injured wrist, then goes golfing instead. I wish they would just leave. We would be better off without them. I’m hoping that the XFL puts a team in San Diego.

That's laughable. They're just part of the machine! Do you have any idea what the process is for a budding high school basketball player? I mean, the whole "Blue Chips" movie aside (i.e., cars, jobs for relatives, etc.), highly regarded players are funneled into shoe contracts, are sold to the highest bidder (i.e., college) by their amatuer or high school coach, and have agents knocking at the door. Wow! You've never played competitive baseball, have you? Do you know how many kids have started playing baseball at 7 and played seriously through high school and then even went on to college to maybe play D1 baseball . . . and then still couldn't even get a minor league contract?? Baseball, more than any other sport except for maybe hockey, requires more training to be competitive at the professional level - why do you think you do not hear about a ton of kids jumping directly from HS to the pros? How about how many kids you hear skipping a couple of years of college to jump directly to the pros? Hmmm . . . still none, huh? That might be because you can count on only one hand the number of professional baseball players who did not play in the minor leagues.

Oh well . . . this is a bit off topic for the thread, but I couldn't keep my pie hole shut about it! And as for the fella who was saying that baseball is obscenely boring . . . ummmm . . . yer a Communist, aren't ya? JK

X-files 12/10/00 - whats up with that yo

X files synopsis: time moves backwards for one person accused of killing his wife. If you haven't seen it yet and you don't want the ending given away, you might want to stop reading this. In this episode the man accused of the killing is experiencing every day in reverse, Friday before Thursday, etc. He keeps going back a day after every day ends. If you saw the episode then you know what I am talking about. My question is this: what do you think about the ending of that episose? After he saves his wife from the killer, 3 months later he was in jail again. What did that mean? Did he end up killing someone afterall or whats up? I wasn't too sure how that fit in with the continuity of the episode so I'm a little confused. Don't get me wrong I think it was an awesome X files even though they didn't show my girl Scully too much.
What did you think about the ending?

It was another version of the "You Get What You Deserve" plot. He ended up in jail because he suppressed evidence in the trial of the murderer's brother.

Not one of their best episodes, but it was better than most of the recent ones.

Hey GotApex users...wondering if someone can give me some good revenge advice. So I exchanged some e-mail with a stranger who was sending me spam. She was basically a dick everytime she wrote something. I made sure I didn't do anything to violate my own TOS and give her ammo to use against me.

Anyways, HYPOTHETICALLY, say I had this person's name...and address...and phone number...and primary e-mail address. Not that I would WANT to use this information or anything, but what COULD I do to make this person's life just a little more inconvinient. Nothing illegal, of course (seriously). And of course nothing that can be traced back to me. I think this person knows her **** about the way the Internet works too, pretty much an expert. I have access to public-use computers...if that helps at all.

I guess this is my passive-aggressive side showing...

Scotch Tape don't be vindictive. Obviously this person is mentally incapacitated. Is there a way you can block mail from this person? If not go to the authorities as what this person is doing is harassment in the eyes of the law. Give fair warning to them and if they continue to harass you take it to the proper people and maybe they will put a scare into that person and all the spamming will stop. By taking this through the proper channels there is less of a possibility that you will bear any reprocussions from the outcome and will look like the good guy trying to get help for someone who desperately needs it. i am very disappointed in all of you, afraid to get your hands dirty. shame, shame! here are a couple little ideas that will give you much more satisfaction: find a friend with a stun gun, or go buy one-they're cheap- lay under the scumbag's car and shock her starter. cars that dont work always annoy the crap out of people. you could try caulking the door jams and putting a garden hose in the car, in the morning the car will be pretty full-you can even throw a few goldfish in to add a little flare-or pirannas if you can find them locally. there is a ton of stuff you can do to people's door handles my favorites are, if they have the type that you lift up on, you can stick dog crap up in there for them to find when they grab the door handle-dont use your own, dna testing!- or you can rub poison oak/ivy on the door handles, that really sucks.
i have found that the automobile is the best way to exact your revenge, you dont have to get close to the person, and you dont necessarily have to get them when they are at home, so less chance of being detected.

WEll what I did as a type of revenge, was to make sure to catch her when she was with her friends, go up, sit down next to her, and start hitting on her.

I told her she was very beautiful and I have been admring her from a distance for such a long time. I threw in a few more complements, cheesy pick up lines, and then porceed to ask her out in front of her "eliete group."
She almost had a heart attack on the spot. She was so pissed off and disgusted that she could even respond. I then so Ill ake your siclence as a yes, see you at 8 tomorow. I got up and walked away.
I told my roomies that i wasnt taking any calls for the rest of the night.

She and her friends must ahve called 30 times that night and the next day.

I never did show up and i doubt she was there either, but was she ever terrified for a day and a half!!!

ok I wasn't going to reply to this but I feel like I should say something.

Yes the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and b/c of that we went to war and people suffered. Let's not forget what the US did in response to the attack. We dropped 2 (not 1) Atomic Bombs over Japan. I know after the Japanese attacked the US the feeling was that this is war and anything goes. Well personally I think 2 atomic bombs being dropped over the small country was a little excessive to say the least. Now I am not Japanese or Asian for that matter, but I think that was the most horrific outcome of the pearl harbor attack. I, of course, have the deepest sympathy to all the people and their families that lost their lives on both sides. There were even rumors flying for a long time that there was a US conspiracy to have the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor so that we would have a reason to use the A-Bomb.
I am sure that wasn't the case, but in any case it was a very sad day for both the US and Japan.

..oh and I think this should be moved to the off-topic forums...but that's just my opinion.

here is the low down... and this i have studied now for about 3 years in my polisci classes.....

the US government knew about pral harbor before it happened... and they let it happen...

why?
they needed to people to get rallied to go into WWII... and they also needed to rally congress...
what better way than blaming intervention into WWII on an attack on america?

basically... we have always been isolationists .. fortress america.. etc etc... the last encounter we had with EUROPE was in the war of 1812 against england over commerical rights... every other conflict was on colonies....
we got into WWI.. becuase if the 'good guys' lost... america would get SCREWED in world commerce...

after teh roaring 20's and the great depression.... the people and congress did NOT want to go to war again... especially not after WWI...
they figured that europeans were idiots..that always went to war.. why bother helping them out again.... when they would probably go to war AFTER WWII?!

the people were devastaed by WWI... the great depression.. and the fact that WWII came about.. even after the treaties of WWI.....

pearl harbor was a way to sucker congress and the people into going to war....

Well for your information for the silly U.S.'ers I would like to post and have a moment of silence for the Montreal massacre in which 14 women were gunned down by mysginost Marc Lepine. The women mostly engineering students - were murdered in 1989 simply for being women at Ecole polytechnique 11 years ago in Canada's worst mass shooting.

In 1991, Parliament declared Dec. 6 the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.

Lepine yelled "you're all a bunch of feminists" before he began shooting.

In addition to the 14 deaths - which included a young female employee shot in a hallway - there were 13 others injured, most of them female.

Lepine took his own life at the school, which is part of the University of Montreal, where his application had been rejected..............

It certainly wasn't the case that Pearl Harbor was supposed to be an excuse to use nukes - the US didn't even know at the time of Pearl Harbor whether it was feasible to create a working nuke.

As for the use of the nukes, it is sad that they were employed, but their use saved an invasion of Japan, which would have cost a ton of Japanese and American lives and resources. Further, the demonstration of a working bomb in a non-test situation gave notice to the Russians (who didn't have a bomb at that time) and the Germans that the same thing could happen to them.

At the same time, it later served to remind the US people of the terrible consequences that a war with the Soviet Union would have.

The immediate results of the bombs and the lessons learned from their use have been extremely valuable and in the end have most likely saved lives.

Well, that's a truckload of BS, Butchie boy. Yes, the first bomb saved lives. The second was entirely gratuitous. Japan was in the verge of/in the process of surrender, and then the US goes and dumps another bomb on Nagasaki. Supox: The US was justified in dropping the Atomic bombs on Japan. The Japanese War Department didn't even want to stop the war even after the bombs had been dropped! It was the Emperor who broke the deadlock and decided to go for peace.

Japanese cities were firebombed and some of those firebomb attacks killed just as many people as the bombs did.

Those rumors you referred to are a bunch of bs. The A-bomb was made to be used on Germany not Japan. Luckily for Germany they surrendered before the bombs were ready. You reap what you sow and Japan in this case got exactly what was coming to it.

Penny, if I remember correctly, the Japanese refused to surrender after the first bomb. Many believe that was the result of a series of miscommunications between the US and the Japanese authorities, but that doesn't change the fact that as far as the US was concerned, the first bomb was not successful in it's intended purpose. You are right that it was unnecessary as a warning to the Russians, the first bomb was sufficient for that purpose - but it DID serve a purpose. And, if it is any consolation, the second bomb is credited with killing only about 1/2-1/3 the people that the first bomb killed.

Northeast Ohio is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves are turning all different colors. I love the shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the hills and saw some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly they are the most peaceful animals on earth. This must be paradise.

Happy ****ing New Year. The weatherman was wrong (AGAIN). We got 34 ****ing inches of snow this time. At this rate it won't melt until the 4th of July. The snowplow got stuck down the road and **** for brains had the balls to come to the door and ask to borrow my shovel. I told him I broke 6 shovels already, shoveling out the **** he plowed into my driveway. I broke the 7th shovel over his ****ing head.

JAN. 4
Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get food and on the way back a deer ran out in front of the car and I hit the ****er. Did about $3,000.00 damage to the car. Wish the hunters would have killed them all last November.

MAY 3
Took the car to the garage in town today. Would you believe the body is rotting away from all the ****ing salt they keep dumping all over the roads. It really looks like a piece of ****.

Moved to Florida today. I can't imagine why anyone in their right ****ing mind would want to live in the God forsaken State of Ohio.

There is Reverend Evil and myself that I know of. We both declare it openly. Good people are the ones that try to hide their motives behind "Good Causes". Evil people are the ones who don't try to hide what they are.

Examples:
Good - "We are establishing this mega fund charity to help the city's unfortuinate, so give us your money. We will manage it for you."

Evil - "Give us your mony. We will have fun spending it."

They say the same thing.

Has anyone else noticed that, while the time recorded for a post submission is correct for your appropriate time zone, the time recorded for edits are still based on the server time?? I just found this little glitch interesting and wondered if anyone else had noticed.

Ok well here is the deal guys, I am not sure about the time postings of stuff, but what I do know is that Vbulletin allows the admin to set a certain amount of seconds (I think its 100 seconds by default) during which the user can go edit their post without anyone knowing they edited it.

If you think about it, it kinda makes sense. How many times have you made some stupid error in a post and noticed it *right* after you post it. Who wants one of those little "this post has been edited" things floating around especially since all you prolly changed was some spelling.

Well anyways, ill go check into that time of post stuff.. hope this helps.

been thinking about this one. who are got|apex?? where'd it come from and what's with the name?

so far, i know there's Apex, Leon, Darth and LPM.

Apex is apparently is the head honcho.

granted, i'm a relative newcomer here. i'm jonesing for a new system and base my purchases to build that system on the reviews and deals i get from here. that's why i started coming.

but now, i'm into this forum stuff and the whole got|apex? world has opened up quite a bit. no more is it just LPM and Darth on the front page..

so are there some interesting history/stories behind got|apex? that folks like me who primarily read the news and deals pages are missing? (and yeah, i just started playing with icons)

He soon realized how difficult a site would be with so much content, yet didn't want to let his readers down. On that note called two of his friends who lived just over the river and through the smog, Mr. L. Shen and Mr. M. Nagel. These great friends helped provide a major site overhaul, which can be seen now, and currently they are revamping that one. In late December Mr. Lam decided to cut down on receiving millions of mail's from all of his new visitors asking questions. So he created a forum, using UBB's code. This opened a world to free speech but, backfired, Mr. Lam now had to check his mail and posts directed to him. The year turned into 2000 and the server was still running, they changed to a different hosting service, RealShell, which also hosts many of my sites . The forums grew and grew and the deal page got more hits everyday. Mr. Shen loved the forums and wanted other visitors and begged Mr. Lam to set up a HSG and HSD Temporary forum where only the wanted had access, of course since Mr. Lam was grateful for the help Mr. Shen had provided it was made so. Then one day Mr. Lam showed off his kick ass site to a female, and she loved it! Falling madly in love with it's designer wanting to bear him many children so they may one day carry on the webpage, when it will all be in real-time, broadband access would be slow, where a computerized Xepa could do the work for you. Mr. Lam became engaged since not many beauties that love computers come around a lot. Yet at the same time, he could not post as much and do as many changes, Flash to: Mr. L Miller, A La Gut Donor (Or doner whichever you like) Mr. Lam called long distance (Of course using the free 2 minute calls from TellMe.com to ask an old buddy if he had time to post stuff. Mr. Miller happy to be picked posted furiously proving in this day and age we can look beyond ones spelling errors or lack of appreciation for good grammar. Mr. Miller spent so much time posting that he became addicted himself to Hardware and Deals, so much so that his life was Apex, for the better his job asked him to go work at GotApex.com full-time. The forums were still growing at exponential rates, The Apex Bro's in the driver seat decided to upgrade to vBulliten, a great choice I might add. Even then as a virtual community grew, some people who liked to create havoc would post offensive material, The Apex brothers had enough to worry about with News, Deals, Reviews and keeping the site up so they created the Bot of all Bots, THE GAM. This character was to read every post as Johnny 5 would, searching for negative comments unApex links and prohibiting dissention amongst any Apex follower. Like any computer The Gam was flawed and had to be scrapped, instead an individual(s) unknown to many took over this position. As the forums developed into rich conversation in the Off Topic and Suckage forums, one man showed his maturity and was deemed SEP, although it has not yet been made official he enjoys his title and attempts to encourage the Apex movement. As the days rolled by, many kinks were worked out and TheCorp (Real Name Unknown) a realshell employee worked hard to keep the growing bonded community with close to real-time access, which he did a few months ago. Through this brief 1 and 1/4 years A webpage has been transformed into a living entity that many have tried to duplicate yet have failed (Qgen AnAnd), of course like many, Apex.com has an occasional Alex N. or Server overload, but all in all GotApex.com is living high. The Apex Brothers, which include the 5; Lam, Nagel, Shen, Miller, and M are at the roundtable (Ok virtual Net meeting) making decisions that will forever change this page (Ie Mascot, Design, and Forum Logos) for the best. Perhaps there are other hidden workers of GotApex.com, but a great applause to the 5 goes out. That is the Tale of GotApex.com, one day maybe we will be able to tell our grandchildren of many sleepless nights, and maybe just maybe an official SEP will be named.

Updates: LPM's note at botton, GAM isn't multiple people, but Leon himself, and Coins to be officially named Mascot of the Got Apex world. Grr The more I read the more I learn... Nagel should be Darth Sorry!

Next thing I knew, I was the news. It's been fun ever since. So Apex got to save those LD cards, though Darth and I are becoming good buds with Mr. UPS.

Internet Fraud

The fact that the free 50 minute free phone card deal from the deals page required a credit card made me leary. What have people's experience been with fraud on the internet? Especially involving credit cards. If you have had any problems, did your credit card company cover it without too much hassle? I have been thinking about maybe getting a card with a very low limit to use for certain internet uses. Anybody have any stories or advice for the rest of us?

I can't even remember how many times I've purchased items on the internet. So far I've never had a problem with fraud. So I tend to find myself pretty uncautious when it comes to security. Just cause I've never had a problem I find myself easily using my CC on non-secure sites thinkin it'll never happen to me. But I'm sure once I experience it I'll learn to know better. Hope that day never comes.

WASHINGTON - The Governors of the U.S. Postal Service today announced that they would allow the recommended decision of the Postal Rate Commission to raise the price of a First Class letter to 34 cents "under protest." New rates for all classes of mail will begin on January 7, 2001. Postage for mailing this year's holiday cards and packages remains the same.
New 34-cent letter rate stamps will go on sale December 15. The first of the new stamps will be marked " USA FIRST-CLASS". In later stamp printings, the phrase "FIRST- CLASS" will be replaced by the 34-cent amount. Over two billion one-cent stamps are already available for customers to use up supplies of older 33-cent stamps.
The new cost of mailing a two pound Priority Mail package increases to $3.95, although a new one pound rate is now also available at $3.50. The cost of mailing a one half pound Express Mail package increases to $12.25.
Overall, rates are rising 4.6 percent, although price increases vary some by class of mail in accordance with the legal mandate for each class of mail to cover its own cost. The cost of mailing a letter will increase from 33 to 34 cents. Each additional ounce will decrease from 22 cents to 21 cents. The cost of mailing a postcard will remain 20 cents. International rates will also rise on January 7.
In a separate action, the Governors rejected four classification changes recommended by the commission including the Courtesy Envelope Mail proposal and Information Based Indicia proposal.

What do you do to relax?

Try to ignore all academic conversation online because I am use to getting it on a daily basis at work,and don't feel like hearing all that bull**** talk when I am away from campus. I will be gearing up for next spring semester since I took a semester off because of illness.
When you all go camping make sure you wear long sleeves no matter where you camp. Damm ticks can make you very ill.

As for relaxing...candles, fur elise and some jasmine bubble bath will do it.. and jets from a jacuzzi or big hands will do the trick too, while I am relaxing in the large tub that I had installed this year in my house.

Is there a good reason why large companies seem to magnetically attract nimrods?

I see it every day at work, I'll go in to do a job for a client, and there will be maybe 5 competant people in every 20 or so. Everyone else is basically hoping, praying that these few Crimson Guard are going to pull projects through for them so they don't all get fired.

What set me off is that I just called Wal-Mart about my gift-cards. The CS rep was very nice actually, but I inquired about my tracking number, which apparently seems to be non-functional. Her response: oh, god, it must be airborne express. We get that a lot.

My question is this: if an entity that wields as much market power as Wal-Mart can't effect a change in operations at a puny dork like Airborne Express, what hope does one lousy customer complaint have? There needs to be a major overhaul of the customer relations mentality in business today, I think. It probably doesn't cost any more: look at companies like Eastbay, which are terrifically successful, and still provide top notch service. It wasn't the CS that killed Pets.com. And Ashford's service is probably making the company money: I know consumers probably look at their prices as inclusive of terrific service.

My point is, why must we suffer the fools that we must today. You know what I'm talking about, we have horror stories on here every day about this mental midgit of a CS rep, or that numbskull handling the phone at ABCXYZ.com Hmph, probably an outgrowth of an overheated economy (renots's favorite term!). Once people start getting axed, maybe some of these blitering idiots won't have the burden of being employed, and they can go back to...I dunno, whatever they do.

...meaning companies can't retain good workers 4 very long, meaning they have 2 overhire so that hopefully 1 out of ten of the people is productive enough 2 cover 4 the other 9; Ur # numbers may vary, but the concept remains the same.

Usually, though, if the productive person is smart enough, they figure out that they're the most productive one there and rightfully ask 4 a raise. Companies, stuck in their routine of overhiring, can't seem 2 find the money 2 retain good employees so unless the productive employee gets conned into a 'management' position, they usually move on2 greener pastures, leaving the other unproductive employees to catch up the slack.

If the cost of living wasn't so insanely high[4 a supposedly 'free' country, one more reason 2 tell the British to "**** Off!"], people could work 4 who they wanted 2, 4 what they wanted 2, instead of having 2 indenture one's self 2 the highest paying master.

Small companies attract nimrods too. They just can't hide as well there because there is ususly no one to cover for their inability to perform. So either they get dumped or the company goes under from too much dead weight.

Large companies can usually support a larger population of dead weight due to higher profits. They are also frequently less selective about prospective employees. Their bureaucracies also encourage hireing a warm body to fill a rec or lose the rec to someone else.

Dazzlingly bright flares from Iridium satellites

Okay... Maybe I'm a nerd, but Saturday I saw my first Iridium flare (mag. -8 for you supernerds!) and all I can say is "holy s*** that was cool!" I can't believe how bright it was.

Iridium satellites have an unusual historical aspect to them, but the bottom line is that there are something like 80 of these satelites slowly spinning in a very precise and consistent orbit that allows for their loctation to predicted. Near sunset and sunrise these satellites pass overhead in sunlight while we're in darkness and if everything is perfect you can see the sunlight reflect of their solar arrays for about 10 seconds. The intensity (magnitude) of the light varies depending your position with respect to the solar array's position.

The highest magnitude you can see from an iriduium flare is -8. The brightest object in the sky is the moon at a level of -12.7 at full moon and the next brightest is venus at -4.4. Following the scale... An iridium flare is about 100X dimmer than the moon and about 65X brighter than Venus. Bottom line is that it's really cool to see.

To find out when you can see one check out this web-site. It's pretty cool in that you can put in your coordinates and it will tell when and where to look to see the next iridium flares for the next 7 days

It seems the Iridium satellites have been saved at the last minute! The following report is from the Chicago Tribune;
IRIDIUM SUPPORTS $25 MILLION BID DEAL COULD SAVE SATELLITE SYSTEM

By Rob Kaiser Tribune Staff Writer October 31, 2000

Iridium LLC, owner of the bankrupt $5 billion satellite system backed by Motorola Inc., has endorsed a $25 million bid for its ill-starred space network from a group led by ex-airline executive Dan Colussy.

Although Iridium has received dozens of offers since declaring bankruptcy in August 1999, this is the first time the company has given its support to a potential buyer.

The last-ditch rescue plan, if approved, could head off an alternate proposal to dispose of the satellites by crashing them into the atmosphere, where the heat of re-entry would disintegrate them.

A hearing on the bid will be held Nov. 8 at U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan. The court must approve any sale.

The proposed deal would largely end the involvement of Motorola, which conceived the Iridium system and was its largest stakeholder.

The satellite company racked up more than $6 billion in losses, including some $3.5 billion for Motorola, which started the system with the ambitious goal of being able to make phone connections anywhere at any time.

Although Iridium more or less pulled off that technological feat, beginning operations in late 1998, it failed as a business. With a $3,000 price for an Iridium phone, plus international calling rates of up to $7 a minute, the company brought in only 15,000 customers before going bust.

As part of the proposed sale, Motorola would turn over responsibility for operating the system to Boeing Co., according to court papers.

Assuming the deal is completed, "Motorola will have no further obligations to operate, maintain or decommission the constellation," according to a release from the Schaumburg-based technology giant.

Under the proposal, Iridium would receive $6.5 million when the sale is completed and the $18.5 million balance during the next several years. Motorola would provide a $30 million bridge loan to the buyers to cover the costs of operating the system during the several-month period it is transferred to Boeing's control.

Boeing, which does not plan to take a stake in the satellite system, likely would use many of the same facilities and employees to keep the Iridium system operational.

Motorola would retain a 2 percent stake in the satellite system, according to a company spokeswoman.

Despite Iridium's endorsement, Colussy's group still may have to compete with other bidders before it can assume ownership of the satellite system.

Several parties have submitted offers recently to the court, including bids for more than $25 million. But Iridium officials declined to back those bids, saying it was unclear if they were bona fide.

Colussy, a former Pan Am executive, couldn't be reached for comment Monday. The company he formed, which is called Iridium Satellite LLC, is believed to include former Iridium Chief Executive Edward Staiano, who also couldn't be reached for comment.

Colussy, Staiano and other investors in the group were involved in an earlier attempt by New York-based merchant bank Castle Harlan Inc. to buy the troubled satellite system. That deal fell apart in July, when Castle Harlan pulled out of the talks.

Sources said the U.S. Department of Defense wants to preserve the satellite system and likely would pay an unspecified amount for Iridium phone service, thereby ensuring the satellite system would have a certain level of revenues.

In addition to the military, the Iridium service would continue to be sold to customers in remote locations, such as those at sea and oil rig operators.

Originally, the service was aimed at a much broader audience, including international business travelers, but the anywhere, anytime phone service proved too expensive and unreliable to compete with cellular systems.

If the Iridium system is not sold, Motorola plans to "decommission" the satellites, setting them on a course to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and burn up.

Here's a question. Amazon.com has a book that I want for $89.95 US dollars. Amazon.co.uk has the same book selling for 24.50 British pounds. If I take the exchange rate to be about 1.45 US dollars per British pound. This brings the book on Amazon.co.uk to be about 35.53 US dollars. Add in another 4.95 British pounds for shipping and the total is $42.71 US dollars. Does this mean I can just buy the book at Amazon.co.uk for less than half the price at Amazon.com? Are there any hidden charges for shipping to US or paying with my US credit card? I have never bought something online from a foreign site. Do I just type in the info the same and it automatically gets converted to US dollars based on the exchange rate? Do I get charged anything extra because I am out of country? I appreciate peoples thoughts/experiences. Thanks.

Not sure about Amazon, but I buy a lot of records from bangingtunes.com in the UK. They do the conversion automatically, using my US credit card, but they do a lot of business overseas. I think the shipping rate is probably higher than 4.95 pounds, though. The shipping for 5 records, which is usually how I get them sent, is about 24.50. So if that means that your book is still cheaper, I'd say go for it. You may want to just e-mail Amazon.co.uk and ask them about it.

Does anybody know if the GC is IN or OUTSIDE the Palm box? In other words, will I have to break the shrinkwrap to attain the GC?

I just wanted to know whether I will be able to say "still in shrinkwrap" on the eBay description.

Anyone know how to cash a Webcertificate?

I'll be damned if I can find a way to do it. My first thought was to just charge the $4 to my ecount account and then dump it in my linked bank account, but ecount won't let you do that, probably because they're the same company.

Then I thought I'd add the card to my PayPal accout, charge the money, and then dump it back into my account. Again, no luck - you apparently need a verification number from the back of the card that you didn't need when I first signed up using my bank card.

Then I thought, hey, I'm a premium member of PayPal so I can accept credit cards on my website, so I'll just send myself the cash, but of course PayPal knew I already had an account so it didn't work.

Anyone have any ideas?

Final Fantasy is probably my favorite. (or the original zelda) I knew every secret to every nook in those games. I used to play final fantasy hours on end, but nothing compared to my original party: Fighter, Thief, W mage, B mage. It was the most fun. Sure, there are better parties, (Two fighters, W mage, B mage; One fighter, 2 R mages, One W mage) but I had everything planned out BEFORE I had the game. I'm talking Nintendo Power, folks. Remeber those "free" issuses they were giving out? One of them was for final fantasy. I remember reading the whole damn strategy guide and I fell in love with the game, so I asked it for my birthday and got too damn addicted to the game.

In fact, just after reading through this, I went to my local used game shop and bought about 20 NES games, and only spent $40. Now that's some serious gaming quality and quantity for your money.

I have a horrible cold too Abbs, I have been taking Vit.C (3 500mg pills a day), Zinc and Echinachea. Saline spray up the nose evey few hours, and running the humidifier. Too much Vit. C will give you the green apple splatters so be careful.

Now, why do many old family remedies involve booze? Mine is a couple of tablespoons of honey some fresh lemon juice and tequila. It really helps with a sore throat, and tastes pretty decent.

NO don't take alka seltzer!! it contains some drug that's been shown to increase your risk for stroke or something. i dunno, i read the article a while ago. I can't remember the name of the cpd that causes the prob, but it starts with a P. maybe i'll remember later on, but right now i'm burnt out. other cold medicines contain the drug too. like comtrex and thats about all i can remember. i think i'm going to sleep now.

Alka seltzer will kick the **** out of a cold-but its LOADED with sodium-MEGA doses of VIT. C work wonders and YES-whats not absorbed will be filtered through the kidneys and be passed out in the urine-but even with all my nursing background I think any long term usage of MEGA DOSES of anything will have some type of adverse affects. Abbra stick with a great big ladle full of wild turkey and honey every hour on the hour-maybe if you are lucky you'll sleep right through your cold!

NO don't take alka seltzer!! it contains some drug that's been shown to increase your risk for stroke or something. i dunno, i read the article a while ago. I heard there's no cure for the common cold cause it's a virus or something. There are many ways to prevent it but once you get it, all you can do is get plenty of rest (and alcohol).

This is what I heard about the Vitamin thing... Vitamins A,D,E,and K are fat soluble and large doses can cause Vitamin poisoning, but that doesn't mean you can't "overdose" on the water soluble Vitamins B,C. That's what I remember learning from Nutritional Science 10. Too much of anything is bad. Didn't someone say that too much of anything will cause cancer? Who knows? Popping all those vitamin pills might cause throat and finger cancer.

I have managed to stay away from most plagues by taking Vitamin C pills (yes, your body will urinate excess amounts, but it can cause kidney stones) One 5000 mg pill won't kill you. Just read the directions.

Drink tons of water and oj. About half of what you eat should be from the fruits/vegetable category. If it's a sinus cold, stay away from dairy. It'll thicken anything trying to come out of your nose or throat.

The best way to beat a cold is not to get it in the first place. If you work out, don't life weights for more than an hour. Any more than 60 minutes will cause your body to release stress hormones which will lower the immune system.
Take your vitamins, and eat your vegetables.

Thoughts on Rio 500

So my brother wanted an MP3 player for Christmas, but I really didn't want to drop the cheese required for something not-crapulent.

However, thanks to Amazon's $50 off $200 coupon, you can get a Rio 500 for $135 and change (after rebate). Does anyone have any thoughts on this thing? I've never owned one, and was wondering if anyone had any experiences with it.

I have the Rio 500, and it's not a bad player. If you crave a large variety without having to haul flash cards around, then it probably isnt the one you're looking for. I take it snowboarding, and it tides me over pretty well. It's extremely small size is a bonus, but it's lack of a radio tuner kind of sucks. For $135, it's not a bad deal. If your bro's a hardcore music addict, and wants to carry a huge load of music with him, look somewhere else. If he is a casual user, it's prolly perfect for him.

Picking over presidential "undervotes" and trying to divine voters' intentions just ain't right! Or at least that's the argument Republicans and Bush family surrogates have been making for the last several weeks in Florida. Doing so can lead to endless recounts, changing the rules after the votes are cast, "mischief," and a number of other bad things.

But apparently this is a rule that only applies east of the Mississippi.

In New Mexico on Tuesday, Republican party officials prevailed upon the state canvassing board to have a judge, of all people (state District Judge David W. Bonem), consider whether undervotes in Roosevelt County should be re-examined and possibly included in the county's tally. Gore currently leads Bush by 483 votes in New Mexico, and there are 570 undervotes in Roosevelt County, which voted for Bush 2-1. Mickey Barnett, a Republican national committeeman for New Mexico, said he found it "highly unusual" that 10 percent of the voters in the southeastern New Mexico county chose not to vote for president. That's of course the same argument Republicans ridicule when it's made in Florida by the Gore forces.

No, the percentage of "undervotes" in Florida is more along the lines of 2.5%, well within a point or two of the historically expected numbers, if you look at non-vote averages around the country over time. 10%, now that's statistically abnormal. I'm not saying impossible, but its far more out of the ordinary than the ballots in FL.

Saying that a sample that small would correctly predict highly unlikely outcomes accurately, would be like an average pre-election poll accurately predicting Howard Phillips' (of the U.S. Constitution party, makes George W. Bush and his cronies look like Al Sharpton) final vote total.

I think you're using some "fuzzy math" here . In fact, as far as this sample is concerned there are only two outcomes. Either a vote for president or no vote for president. The issue in New Mexico was not missing ballots, dog-eaten ballots, or what have you. It was simply a statistically abnormal number of ballots that did not register a vote for president when read by the machine. The rest of the ballot is not being analyzed for the purposes of this measurement, and is independent from the line listing the presidential vote (despite what some desperate Democrats would have us believe). For all intensive purposes this is a presidential poll, so pennypinch's (and my) argument stands.

Are you one of the millions of Americans who feel you have no control over the government, that lately it seems to be acting more like a "master" than a "servant"?

Did America's Founders leave us defenseless? No, they did not. We, the people, do have a very powerful personal "handle" on our government. This is the power of the jury to judge the law itself, if justice requires it, and to refuse to convict the defendant if the law is lacking in merit. Jurors may believe a law to be unconstitutional, or fundamentally unfair, or misapplied in the case at hand. In order to fulfil their responsibility to the defendant, the community, and their own consciences, they must not set aside their own judgment of right and wrong. Jurors can never be punished for a verdict which displeases the judge.

In a word, the jury was traditionally viewed as a political institution, charged with the responsibility not only to deliver justice in a particular case, but to enforce the Bill of Rights! Just like the three sitting branches of government, it has a veto on proposed laws.

These principles date back hundreds of years. In 1670, William Penn was arrested for preaching a Quaker sermon, by so doing breaking the law of England, which made the Church of England the only legal church. The jurors in his trial, led by Edward Bushell, refused to convict him, despite being detained for days and held without food, water, tobacco or toilet facilities. The most adamant four of them were then put in prison for nine weeks.

When it eventually released the four by court order, the highest court of England both acknowledged and established that trial jurors could not be punished for their verdicts. Our freedoms of religion, peaceable assembly and speech thus all trace to our right to a trial by a jury of peers, a jury unintimidated by the government.

The sedition trial of John Peter Zenger, in the American colonies, was another landmark case. Zenger was arrested for publishing materials critical of the Royal Governor of New York colony and his cronies, accusing them of corruption. While the charges were true, the jury was told that under the law, truth was no defense.

Zenger's attorney, Andrew Hamilton, argued to the jury that they were judges of the merits of the law, and should not go against good conscience to convict Zenger of violating such a bad law. The jurors agreed. Zenger was acquitted in about fifteen minutes, and his case helped establish the right to freedom of the press.

As Thomas Jefferson said, in a letter to Thomas Paine in 1789: "I consider trial by jury as the only anchor yet devised by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution."

America's second President, John Adams, said in 1771: "It is not only [the juror's] right, but his duty...to find the verdict according to his own best understanding, judgment, and conscience, though in direct opposition to the direction of the court."

And John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, said: "The jury has a right to judge both the law as well as the fact in controversy." Georgia v. Brailsford, 1794.

In American legal tradition, an unconstitutional law is viewed as invalid, and is no law at all. And until a law passes the test of community acceptance, and is enforced by juries, it cannot be viewed as a done deal. Meanwhile, legislators continue to receive community feedback on how their work is being received.

Judges have, for the last hundred years, tried to hide this power from the American people, and now actively attempt to suppress it. Well, if you know this you are most likely an informed and intelegent person. The two qualities that will get you kicked of a jury durring selection in a heartbeat. The people with innitiative and common sense usualy use it to AVOID jury duty and therefore cause the system which protects us most, to be broken. So if selected for jury duty pretend to be stupid. Then you will have a chance to have a real effect on our community and may be even our country.

Indeed, if juries do not have the right and power to nullify the law, we must face the fact that Harriet Tubman, one of the great heroines of American history, would and should have been guilty of multiple federal crimes by violating the fugitive slave laws. That is a morally revolting prospect, but judges today who reject nullification must confess that they would enforce the fugitive slave laws and convict Harriet Tubman. If they were to honestly admit as much, and hold themselves powerless to disobey unjust and morally despicable laws, they should be told that "obeying orders" was not accepted as a defense in the Nazi war crime trials at Nuremberg.

It is tempting to say that today we don't have laws like the "fugitive slave laws." That would be a serious self-deception. The prisons are full of people who have done nothing wrong, except be in possession of a "controlled substance" that the federal government, at least, has no authority under the Constitution to "control." People dying of cancer or AIDS have been arrested and jailed just for growing and smoking marijuana, the only thing that enables them to eat, take their medication, and stay alive. Despite the passage of medical marijuana laws in many states, as far apart as California and Maine, federal prosecutors have viciously targeted medical mairjuana activists, who are often very ill themselves, and have found pliant judges who prohibit medical necessity defenses.

But must we simply accept such possible injustices in order to uphold the rule of law? By allowing jury nullification, do we not license the misuse of the principle, as when Southern white juries would acquit KKK'ers for murdering or terrorizing blacks or Jews? Unfortunately, as long as we have trials, by jury or otherwise, it will be possible for bias to misuse the law and perpetrate injustices. KKK'ers would have gotten acquitted because a large part of (white) public opinion, and the staff of the courts themselves, was biased in their favor. Regardless of the duties of judges or juries, a means was going to be found in such circumstances to prevent their conviction. The remedy for that is a system of checks and balances. A local jurisdiction, whether in police or courts, that allows KKK'ers to murder people and get away with it is violating the 14th Amendment by denying the "equal protection of the law," making itself liable to federal civil rights intervention, as was vigorously pursued by Ulysses S. Grant, before the shameful capitulation of the Republicans, after Grant was gone, in 1876.

Does jury nullification contribute to, rather than mitigate, such judicial misbehavior? No, because it is part of the system of checks and balances itself -- a check against the bias of judges and the irrationality and corruption that creeps steadily into the law, as irresponsible legislators and judges think about things other than justice. Jury nullification is not a violation of the rule of law because it is part of the rule of law. It represents a basic misconception of the principle of the "rule of law" itself to say that it means that everyone absolutely must obey the law until the law can be changed by the appropriate processes. Indeed, that conception of the rule of law would forbid civil disobedience, which was justified by Martin Luther King, quoting St. Augustine, that, "An unjust law is no law at all." But how can we have the rule of law if we accept something like that? How can people just go around judging for themselves whether a law is just or not? The answer is, that they have to, and that is simply the principle of moral conscience. The rule of law is not contrary to that; for the rule of law is not an injunction to blind obedience. Instead, the rule of law is a principle of the limitation of the authority of government.

To be "ruled by laws, not by men," is the old expression. Now, a jury nullifying a law or a protester practicing civil disobedience is not engaged in ruling. Instead, they are doing the precise opposite: negating the instructions and actions of government. The principle of the rule of law does the same kind of thing, for it means that the authority and power of government and of individuals in office is limited to those spheres, those issues, and those actions that are specified by the law. The rule of law denies to government unlimited or discretionary power and authority. The rule of law is thus part of a system of checks and balances to prevent dictatorship and despotism. Because of that, it is curiously the case that you do not need to have laws to have the rule of law: for the whole system of Common Law developed through the practice of the courts in considering claims that someone had committed a wrong. The original purpose of trial by jury in the Magna Carta was similar. The threat, indeed, addressed by the Magna Carta was of the laws and judges of King John. If Magna Carta juries could not nullify the laws of King John, or ignore the instructions and rulings of his judges, trial by jury would have been a useless protection. But the Barons, in obtaining King John's pledge, as Lysander Spooner wrote in 1852, "were engaged in no such senseless work as that."

The jury is the last line of defense, the last check and balance, against tyrannical government, if, that is, it is charged with determining the justice of a case and not just with blindly applying the law as given by a judge. It was become a very interesting perversion of the sytem of checks and balances when, as we are told, the Constitution means whatever the Supreme Court says it means but that we are then expected to obey without resistance. Since the Supreme Court has in general, since the New Deal, interpreted the Constitution to mean exactly the opposite of its original purpose, which had been to establish a federal government of limited and enumerated powers, but which now seems to have gotten us a national government of unlimited and plenary powers, which can legislate or regulate in any matter whatsoever, what we have seen is the destruction of the rule of law, through the arbitrary authority of an irresponsible court, rather than its preservation. When the citizen demands that the government obey the Constitution, and the government replies that it is obeying its interpretation of the Constitution, which gives it authority and discretion far beyond that overthrown in the American Revolution, then the whole idea of the "rule of law" has been turned around to justify the very kind of arbitrary, discretionary, and unaccountable authority that it was supposed to prevent.

They totally disregard{ed} the Constitution and make up laws for their agenda [example: see Roe vs. Wade} instead of the legislative branch properly carrying out its defined role of passing laws the people want. This shameless behavior of judicial activism has gotten slightly better over the past decade with the appointment of those who who know what the proper role of the Supreme Court is. But alas there still remains a lot of work to be done and not only with the Supreme Court. The legislative and executive branches of government, especially of the federal government, have also engage in such power grabbing of matters which are none of its concern.

Can people not see the ultimate power the judicial branch of government has grabbed for itself? No of course not as long as government takes care of them they don't worry about it. Ultimately this lemming-like behavior will lead to tyranny.

Each branch of government under the Constitution has its own resposibilities and is supposed to be equal to the other 2 branches of government. So one branch of government is not supposed to rule over the other 2 branches of government as has the Judicial branch done for many years over the legislative and executive branches of government. Just as in the jury system we the people are the supposed to be ultimate arbiter of whats okay. We, the people are the final check and balance in this intricate system of check and balances set up by the great founders of this wonderful country.

Basically this **** needs to stop. As evidence by the recent misconduct of the Florida Supreme Court throwing out rules this crap happens at the state level.

Freedom or Tyranny folks. Its your choice. So take back the power you have.

The "due process clause" of this amendment forces the government to act fairly and similarly with each and every person; no one may be subject to something different than is prescribed by the appropriate law[gunowners R not 2nd class citizens dammit].The Federal Government does have the power of emminent domain, they may take private property for a legitimate public purpose. In jail U R told nothing, but kept in a cell all alone where U can't talk 2 people. U ask 4 a lawyer, but they say U don't need one.[Sixth Amendment] They keep U there 2 weeks.[Eighth Amendment]

Meanwhile, the police have gone 2 Ur home. Nobody told U they were going 2 Ur home. They smash through the front door, because that seems like a quick way 2 get in. They R looking 4 evidence, anything they can find, that they can use 2 charge u with breaking the law. The police spend all day, opening up every cabinet and drawer and dumping the contents on the floor. They slice open Ur mattress looking 4 something, they don't gnow what. They knock a few holes in the wall looking 4 concealed safes. They don't find anything except the computer U used 2 print Ur sign against the King.[Fourth Amndment]

After two weeks in jail, the jailers take U into a dark room, strap U 2 a chair, and tell U 2 confess 2 all of Ur crimes. U tell them that U haven't commited any crimes. They say things will be much better 4 U if U just confess. U keep telling them there is nothing 4 U 2 say. The jailers bring in a big guy with a baseball bat and boxing gloves. he starts 2 pound Ur face with his fists, and then 2 hammer Ur knees with the bat. U're bleeding from the mouth and nose, U lose a tooth, and U're screaming 4 it all 2 stop. The jailers tell U that it will stop if U just if U tell them the crimes u commited. U say that U'll say anything 2 stop the torture.[Fifth Amendment]

The jailers provide U with a written statement that says U admit 2 have burned down a school, stolen a car, and tried 2 kill the mayor. U sign the statement and the torture stops.[Fifth Amendment]

A couple of days later, Ur bruises have healed a bit, the bleeding has stopped, and U can barely walk on Ur battered legs. They take U from jail 2 a court house. They bring u 2 a judge. U have no lawyer.[Sixth Amendment]

The judge asks U what u've done. The police tell the judge that U openly insulted the King, that U printed signs against the King, and paraded around with the sign in public. The police also give the judge that written statemen U signed, where it says U burned the school, stole a car, and tried 2 kill the mayor. The judge asks U if U admit 2 all the crimes. The jailer who tortured U, standing in a nice suit a few feet away, looks at U carefully. U say yes, U did commit all those crimes[what the hell else can U do?][Fifth & Sixth Amendments]

The judg sentences U 2 life in prison in Alaska. It's a prison where they keep the most vicious of criminals. In addition 2 being jailed 4ever, U will be whipped every Saturday 4 the rest of Ur life.[Eighth Amendments]

All of Ur household goods and property R taken and sold, with all revenue from sales being kept by the local government officials. Not a penny goes 2 U or Ur family.[Fifth Amendment]

One of my friends had mentioned it about a year and a half ago in a conversation. A few months later I had a memory spurt and for somereason during a Got Milk commercial I remembered Got | Apex and I was online anyways so I decided to check it out. I quickly jumped on the Toshiba 2109 DVD player and Surround Sound deal for 279 then bought about 40 dvds all at about 10 bux a piece (I love 10 dollar off no limit coupons and many email addresses, and since they weren't smart yet and you could use the same CC I went buck wild).. Ever since then I've been here every day checking the new deals, bought a Toshiba 6109c DVD/Tuner combo for 200 (retail is 799).. Wow I love this site! =0)

About a year ago I was picking up a dvd from Mercata. I think it was Austin Powers for $5 or something. I had gotten the link from DVDpricesearch. There's that place to leave messages about a product. A bunch of people were saying that gotapex was the best deal site on the net. I had a look, then came back a month or so later. i would say the face. body is a plus, but i notice the face first. the body can be improved relatively easily whereas the face cannot be changed without much work and money. besides, the nice facial features will get passed on to your kids, if the chromosomes cross over right. you can control your kids' weight to a degree at least. so in conclusion, the face of a man attracts me the most. i do have a question for all you butt lovers out there. i NEVER look at a guy's butt. i dont see what is so great about a butt. i think its one of the worst looking parts of the body! its so weird looking! what is so great about pinching a butt? how can you derive pleasure from pinching one of the dirtiest parts of someone's body? haha. well i dunno, i just dont understand the wonders of the "butt." please, someone explain the fascination.

First off, never listen to your moms when it comes to stuff like that. She squeezed you out, so naturally she thinks you and your freakishly large behind are cute.

As long as there are 2 right leaning parties against one slightly left of center party, the right leaning parties will/have lost over the last 20-25 years. Now it's more of an even fight I guess you could say. Reform kinda merged with the other right leaning party called the Progressive Conservatives to form the Canadian Reform Alliance. They did it because there is/was a huge vote split in Canada. The Progressive Conservatives however are still around. They didn't officially join the RA. It would be more accurate to say the RA basically stole a large portion of the PC's membership.

The other 2 parties are the Bloc Quebecois and the NDP (New Demcrats). The Bloc has only one goal: To split quebec from Canada. They have about 12% since Quebec is quite large.

The NDP are really left wing socialists that basically want a social program for everything from watering your grass to teaching toddlers how to walk. They spend a lot of money and like debt you could say. A slightly biased view, but Ontario is still recovering from their brief 5 year reign.

The Natural Law Party of Canada are nutty.

The PC are running some guy who used to be prime minister and will get about 6% of the vote.

Skinny people piss me off! Especially when they say things like, "You know sometimes I forget to eat." Now I've forgotten my address, my mother's maiden name, and my keys. But I've never forgotten to eat. You have to be a special kind of stupid to forget to eat.

A friend of mine confused her valium with her birth control pills. She had 14 kids, but she doesn't give a ****.

They keep telling us to get in touch with our bodies. Mine isn't all that communicative but I heard from it the other day after I said, "Body, how'd you like to go to the nine o'clock class in vigorous toning?" Clear as a bell my body said, "listen bitch... do it and you die."

The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing(and then they marry him.)

I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are eating too much, smoking too much, impulse buying and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That is my idea of a perfect day.

I'll be busy playing at work (ok, this also happens occasionaly when I'm actually working too) and then realize it's time to go home. about an hour after I get home, I suddenly get really hungry. First of all, I'd like to once again publicly thrash the idiot who allowed the punch-type ballot with chads to exist. Secondly, you're missing the fundamental point that there is no statistical relationship between questionable votes and presidential candidates - so I find your statement "its the only way gore can get his lying, deceptive, hypocritical self in the white house." sounding pretty silly and childish. Additionally, while I'm sure you can provide me with explicit examples to back up your bitter diatribe, I hope you're well aware that if anything, they more than apply to Gov. Bush, and I can show you specific examples to back up my arguments). Do you deny the voter's obvious intent to vote for a specific candidate because the chad wasn't completely removed from the ballot? Do you deny that that system is inherently flawed? Voters - a lot of voters - were denied their say in this election because the chads did not completely detach from the ballot. Granted, if a ballot has several dimples, you don't count it - but if a ballot has one unmistakeable dimple and no others, then it's a vote. Furthermore, ballots where the chad was hanging from the ballot should most definitely be counted - it's not the voter's fault that when they punched the hole the chad did not completely detach.

It frightens me that people are unwilling to count ballots where an obvious choice has been made - this nonsense surpasses party lines and comes right down to the fact that people deserve by right a say in their presidential election and they are being denied that fundamental right. In any election, that is completely intolerable, and in an election as close as this where it comes down to an incredibly small number of votes, hesitation is completely unacceptable. Returning to party lines, I find it very disturbing that the Republicans seem far more concerned that their candidate has won, and much less concerned with actual votes, votes that could take the election away from them. If Florida's votes follow the trend that we've been seeing in the rest of the state, Bush should still win. So then, what are you afraid of? That a little technicality will steal your president away? I'm sick of this garbage - votes much be counted, the will of the people must be shown, and we must have a president. This childish squabbling must end and I will not have a president - be it Bush OR Gore - that was elected on a technicality.

1. Don't get upset about people name-calling you candidate, you started it by calling Bush's Sec. of State a hussy.
2. All politicians are lying, deceptive, and hypocritical. It's part of the job, to pretend otherwise is foolish.
3. The only places that dimpled and hanging chad balots are being counted is in areas that strongly support Gore. The counties that support Bush are not having recounts so he is not getting the same benefit. If all the counties were doing the same thing it wouldn't be an issue.
4. If Gore wins it will be on a technicality, because he lost the first count. If Bush wins he will have won despite a technicality.

The answer, is of course, because Bush doesn't want things to change - as it stood at the close official certified count, he was declared the winner. Some have suggested that if he were to do a recount, he might not gain nearly as many votes as Gore did - and what would that mean? Why was there an overwhelming amount of error in Democratic votes but not in Republican votes? Since he refused a recount in strongly Republican counties, all of this is theorized and can't be proven, but the image that remains, whether true or not, is that George W. Bush is a man who cares solely about winning, and doesn't give one red cent about how he got there.

I don't mean to be rude, but I'm perplexed by your logic here. For Gore to win, he'll have to get enough votes in the recount to surpass Bush. I'm not going to accuse you of anything - I'm greatly concerned with our system of politics and I was deeply disappointed when Ralph Nader didn't get enough votes to ensure funding for a third party. Even including Buchanan and Nader, I'm not happy with any of the four combos, but that's the way politics have to be - my views and opinions are not shared by the nation and for one politician to cater to me and no one else would cost him/her the election. Bush, Gore, Nader, and Buchanan all have their faults, some more than other, but the object of the game for me is to elect the person whose policies I most agree with, and the policies that I don't agree that must exist are tolerable. I find that in Gore, while other citizens find that in other candidates. As a very opinionated and stubborn person, it bothers me that people don't share my views because I can't conceptualize why they would feel differently. However, that's a pretty huge lesson of life - that not everyone or even a majority of people in the case of this election feel the way I do, and that's something I have to accept. Coming back to the question of Florida, I can honestly say that as if it is clear to me that George W. Bush won the election - if it's clear that he did - I wouldn't have nearly as much of a problem with his presidency. However, due to the massive amounts of irregularities and possible "illegal" legal action on the sides both parties, that's not something I can accept right now.

Gore won the popular vote. However, thats not the way the Constitution reads, so that shouldn't get him President. Should the electoral college be gotten rid of? I think so, but that is a separate issue...

They counted once, Bush won.
They counted twice, Bush won. (first recount)
They counted three times, Bush won. (absentees)
They counted four times, Bush won. (hand count)

Even if Gore wins another count, isn't that 4-1? hehe...

Dimple issue - I know I've thought about doing something in the past, and then not doing it. Just cause theres a dimple, doesn't mean they meant to vote for Gore. I think its very plausible that people decided not to vote for either... I know my friend was torn and started selecting one candidate (probably put a dimple) and then selected another...

Hanging chads - they're votes, most of them were counted, and if they weren't counted, they should be.

"confusing butterfly ballot" - anyone who couldn't figure that ballot out, shouldn't be allowed to vote.

the courts - The constitution states its up to the legislature to determine how they count the votes. It is actually their legal right to judge the votes how they feel is appropriate, not the courts.

hand recounts - no, they're not more accurate then machines in general. have you ever tried counting 300 of something twice and getting the same number? Now try 6 million. Have you guys seen them count these ballots? It takes 30 seconds for each ballot!!! 30 seconds times 6 million ballots equals 3 million minutes, equals 50,000 hours, equals 2083 days, equals a few years...

ballots in general - lets have local networks with no outside connection so noone can hack at the polling centers and you click your choice... when the poles close, they call up and say the results, no errors possible.

who should be president - bush, gore needs to give it up so we can get on with it... he tried, i agreed with the first recount, but now its getting ridiculous...

What of the military votes?

I'm personally offended that they would consider throwing out military votes becasue they might tend to go for one political party.

The military is in civilian control and therefore cannot be a political for either party. But for one party to attack the military by blatently disregarding the votes of the men and women serving overseas, thats just wrong.

That goes beyond party affiliation, thats attacking those that preserve national security.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

MYTH:
There are more than 10,000 votes in Miami-Dade that have never been counted.
David Boies: "[T]here are over 10,000 ballots that have never been counted
once for the presidency of the United States." [Today Show, 11/27/00]

FACT:

* Every ballot in Miami-Dade was counted at least twice - once on election
night and again during the automatic recount.

* In every election, there are a significant number of ballots that are cast
by voters without choosing a candidate in every race on the ballot, including
races for President. For example, in this election, 5% of the voters in
Idaho, 3.9% of the voters in Illinois and 3.6% of the voters in Wyoming cast
a ballot without registering a vote for President.

* The 10,000 votes (actually 9,000 according to their filing) about which the
Gore campaign has been complaining constitute only 1.6% of the ballots cast
in Miami-Dade. These ballots were counted - twice; they merely registered no
vote for President

* This reality reflects common sense: a voter may want to vote for a
candidate for the Senate, House or other office, but be undecided about the
choice for President. In particular, a voter who usually votes for
candidates from one party may vote for local or statewide candidates, but be
uncomfortable with his or her party's choice for President and yet unwilling
to vote for the other party's candidate. So he or she might cast a ballot
without marking a choice for President.

MYTH:
If you counted all the votes that already have been counted in some of the
recount, Gore would actually be ahead by 9 votes.

FACT:

* Democrats get to this number by adding unreported and unofficial votes from
the late manual recount in Palm Beach and from the partial manual recount
from Miami-Dade, and by subtracting the valid military overseas ballots and
some of the certified votes from Nassau County.

* The Florida Supreme Court set a deadline of 5 p.m. on Sunday for completing
manual recounts, almost tripling the statutory time period for counting
mandated by Florida's Legislature.

* Palm Beach did not complete its manual recount by the Supreme Court's
deadline. Miami-Dade returned to its original decision of not proceeding with
a manual recount.

* The 157 "interim gain" for Gore in Miami-Dade came from a selective recount
of the most Democrat precincts. Gore won these selected precincts by
approximately 75% to 25%, while Gore won the entire county only by 53% to
46%. It would be unfair to use this interim change without counting
Republican precincts, too.

* Precincts in Miami-Dade, including those with predominantly Hispanic and
Cuban American voters, favored Bush. The Gore approach would treat these
minorities in a discriminatory fashion.

* Military overseas ballots that were valid under Florida and federal law
should be counted. Counties recognized this and counted them. Even Joe
Lieberman said that such military ballots should not be rejected.

& Even if you add the 157 interim gain for Gore in Miami-Dade
and the final manual recount of net 192 for Gore in Palm Beach (as reported
by the NYT), and then also subtract the over 50 votes that belong to Bush in
Nassau County (see below), Bush still wins by well over 100 votes.

MYTH:
Miami-Dade would have conducted a manual recount if not for the Republican
"mob" that "intimidated" the canvassing board. KLAIN: "We think already
almost 160 votes were counted in Dade County before the mob stopped the
count.... But I think that to say that a mob can storm a counting facility,
stop a count, and then that's going to provide the end because a partisan of
the Bush campaign, Ms. Harris, refuses to accept returns and cuts off the
counting, I don't think that's the kind of end that we have to American
elections." [GMA, 11/27/00]

FACT:

* The record shows that the crowd was reacting to the Board's decision
to move the recount behind closed doors, where it could not be observed by
the public or the media, and to limit the recount to only a select set of the
votes.

* No Board member mentioned the protests as a factor in the decision, and
Judge Leahy of the Board has already stated clearly that he was not
intimidated by the crowd. ???? The police made no arrests, received no
assault complaints, and did not even instruct the crowd to desist. The crowd
was quieted promptly.

MYTH:
In Nassau County, the board violated Florida law by adding votes from earlier
tabulations that had been rejected by the board as illegal.

FACT:

* On election night, all the votes were counted, but during the
machine recount, 218 ballots were accidentally separated from the rest, and
not counted. As a result, Bush received 124 fewer votes and Gore received 73
fewer votes than on election night.

* After the recount, the Nassau County Board supervisor discovered her
mistake, and tried to correct it. Because the Supreme Court of Florida had
held the date open for final certification until Sunday at 5:00 p.m., the
Division of Elections informed the supervisor that she could revise the count
to make it accurate.

* The Board (2 Democrats and 1 Republican) voted unanimously to certify the
original election night count - which included the 218 ballots - rather than
the machine recount total (which mistakenly omitted those ballots).
